Year 1 trip to Port Lympne Animal Reserve 8.6.2018

Everyone came in early and we soon set off to the Animal Reserve, where we collected a wheelchair for Ethan, who had only just had his cast removed.  First we caught a glimpse of the tigers and had a good look at the African hunting dogs.  Then we headed downhill to Basecamp.  Here we had a little play after the long journey on the minibus, followed by tuck and an obligatory toilet break!

Our driver for the Safari Lorry was standing ready and helped us all strap in safely.  At first all the animals (other than some foxes raiding food) were away in the distance and it was a bit disappointing. But as we drove on through the Africa paddock, there was plenty to please everyone.

Ostriches held us up as they strutted past, checking us out for food.  There were lots of different antelope and deer close to us, with beautiful fawns lying in the grass.  Further away were gnu (wildebeest), zebra and giraffes.  We got a better look at more giraffe at their house where some were feeding outside from a high branch.  We learned that a baby giraffe had been born there that night!

After our safari we walked through the Carnivore Territory, down to our lunch spot.  Here we were mobbed by a hungry seagull and Mrs Jordan chased him off regularly so that no rolls would be stolen this year!  Then we went in the playground to let off steam.

Nearby was the Dinosaur Forest and we walked through time, identifying dinosaurs and remembering our earlier topic.  Sadly, the Ice Age animals had all been moved to Howletts.

Then we trudged slowly up the hill - it was getting rather hot by then -  stopping to view different primates on the way.  Everyone loved the gorillas, especially the youngster playing.  After that we got to play in the maze and enjoy pretending to be lost.

Finally, it was one big push up the rest of the hill to where we had started.  We were all hot, thirsty and tired, and ready for a snooze on the journey back to school, after a final drink and snack stop.

Everyone had been so good all day!  Mrs Jordan and Mrs Riggs were superstars pushing Ethan up and down hills.  The predicted rain had held off.  What a lovely final trip for Year 1!
