Year 4 trip to Deal Castle

On Tuesday the ninth of October, Year four went to Deal Castle to continue our learning about King Henry VIII.

As we stepped out of the minibus, a gush of warm air blew right into my face, I looked up at the castle - it was beautiful. I noticed it was made of stone in the shape of a poppy. We’ve been told than King Henry VIII ordered it to be built like a fort to protect against French invasion.

As we stepped into the castle, it was dark and silent and all I could see was a burned iron pole on the floor which was quite unexpected. We eventually found our way to the map and realised that we were only at the beginning of our fantastic adventure around the castle. Then we went to dim room with two large arches leading us to many doors.

We walked through the first door to find a nearly completely empty room apart from a tiny closet. In that room there was another arch into a long corridor so we just followed the path. Eventually, we ended up in a room with a large wishing well, it took up most of the space in the place. It was rather hard for all of us to fit so we had to take turns to take a peek inside.

Next, we headed down a spiral staircase that led us to a pile of wooden guns, I think they were called muskets. We were allowed to carry them around with us through the underground escape tunnels. The tunnels felt like a gloomy maze that took us to a halt. The first daring person was Mrs Brown and I was near the back. When we were about one metre away from the light I could not see a thing, not even the back of my hand. I suspected that there might be a set of stairs in the darkness.

Finally, we went to a room with chalk and paper and we were asked to leave a mark after ourselves, so people would know that we visited. Then we began to run around and look for headphones to listen to a story about TUDORS. It was really interesting.

It was definitely one of the most enjoyable mornings of the term.
